To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter to gather more information about your job position as an apprentice digital video production producer. I found your advertisement in the local newspaper, and I noticed some things that are unclear and incorrect. The job description is slightly unclear and confusing, the hours that are stated are between 10-45 hours per week which are variable depending on the work. But the salary is the confusing aspect, you have stated that the salary could be between £15000 - £35000, but you have not stated who will get what salary, or what work you will have to achieve to receive the higher salary, you have simply stated the job roles that will happen when working in the media industry. You have defined that the applicant must be aged below thirty, is there a reason for this? If so could this be clarified to give applicants knowledge of why they cannot apply. You have written that they must have religious views as a Christian, yet again Is there a reason for this if so could this be clarified. Contracts are a signed agreement between the employer and the employee and help both the employer and the employee know their role in the department. Contracts can be spoken or written agreements but in most jobs they are written as they can be used in a force of law. It’s very wise for an employee to know where they stand with their employer. This leads me to talk about confidentiality clauses, this is a non-disclosure agreement is a legal document between one or two employers, that disclose personally and confident matters about the employee that they do not wish to share with a third party.

The Equality Act is discrimination in the work industry, that is related to race, age, gender, sexuality and is illegal. As an employer your aim is to give an equal opportunity to all applicants that apply, but for your job position you have stated as I said above the age being below thirty, and their religious views being Christian, this may not be classed as discrimination but because you have not given a good reason why people may take offence. As an employer your job is to make codes of practice to state you are complying with the Equality Act (2010) this gives your applicants a better understanding when applying for a certain job role. This brings me on to talk about trade unions and protecting the employees. To be in a trade union you have to pay a yearly fee of £120 but it comes with its benefits when being protected in the working environment. During your job description you have stated they will be making a short documentary that can be shown to children at high school grade. This is okay but you then carry on to talk about they will be interviewing teenagers and other individuals who may or might have been affected by the topic of rape and including male offenders and female victims. To interview teenage female girls about a strong topic is dangerous when thinking about the Equality act and the employees’ rights.  For a young female teenager to have gone through such a strong topic will affect the teenager when bringing it back up, it could trigger physical and emotional struggles and could do them more harm than good. Not only have you asked them to interview young male and females, they are also not under your employment yet they are only applicants this could cause a big issue if something was to go wrong although it’s their responsibility, they are doing it to get your job, so the trade union would not benefit them due to not being and employer.

During the advertisement for the job you could have included some codes of conduct stating what they can and cannot do to protect themselves as they are not yet in employment. This will protect the applicant and also you the employer. This will protect the applicant and also you the employer. You the employer are responsible for writing up codes of conducts and policies and procedures that fit the job description and the environment they will be around. This will help later down the line if a legal issue was to come up.  How are you as an employer asking the applicant to portray the re-enactments between the female victim and the male offenders, the audience watching can easily be manipulated with the way one of the two are presented this could be through clothing of the victims, settings and even camera angles, it would be sensible to inform the applicant the way you would like the documentary to have an impact on the audience and what is their focus point during the short documentary. Also due to the age range of the female victims they will not be old enough to give the consent to film as they are under the age of 18, this could turn into a legal pursuit if not careful. A good example of representation is Amy Winehouse she was known as a beautiful young singer, but after her drug addiction the papers and other articles changed their views making the audience think differently about Amy Winehouse, she later passed away and the newspapers and articles changed their opinions giving her a good send off, this is almost confusing to see due to what they previously said about her it’s almost like they are apologising for what they previously said. After representing someone it can have an impact on the audience, this will cause social concerns, for example you have stated female victims that have been associated with the topic of rape, this could give the audience a social concern that young females are dressing to attract male offenders. Or that all males can have or will have been associated with the topic you have chosen. Different scenarios will be changed through the public’s eye, but attempting to organise it more clearly so the applicant has a broader idea of how to represent will help.

Ofcom is a broadcasting code that is required by The Communications Act (2003) and the Broadcasting Act (1990) which they draw up a code that they then will enforce. Ofcom stands for The office of Communications which is a government approved regulator. They particularly protect under 18’s and harm and offence. Ofcom exists because of the Communications Act and the Broadcasting Act. Protecting under 18s in section 1 issue 5 of the Ofcom broadcasting code, rule 1.8 and 1.9 state the coverage of sexual and other offences in the UK involving under-eighteens. This area is focused on programme makers that may wish to take legal advice when showing a certain topic that may be harming to watch for someone under the age of eighteen or for a viewer who has a child that is under the age of eighteen. This comes under the Criminal Evidence Act (1999) This is where you should include your codes of conduct stating what the applicant can and cannot do relating to protecting the under eighteens that they are interviewing and doing re-enactment with. Section two of the Ofcom code informs employers and employees the code for harm and offence and the generally standards when working. It includes different context meanings that may be deemed as harmful or offensive. This topic could also relate to your job advertisement in the way female victims are portrayed in the re-enactments will they be harmed during the process to show the audience how this topic occurs and in anyway will they be taken offensive so it makes the audience create a social concern about the topic and to female victims and male offenders. This brings me on to mention the Obscene Publications Act (1959) this is an act that is to protect the publication and to provide protection and strengthen the law when concerning pornography. This relates extremely well with your job advertisement, when you have informed the applicant to make re-enactments of the topic will this include nudity or scenes of a sexual nature, due to the age of your victims you will not be able to include nudity or scenes of a sexual nature as this would be taken further when protecting under-eighteens and the harm and offence this may occur if they are stuck in that situation.  BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification to let the audience know the rating for films, and video games. This will help the audience know if their younger children are suitable for watching it. In your advertisement you have not included what rating you will be giving, this could cause some confusion if the title of your production is aimed to young teenagers but your content inside is completely the opposite. If the content is hard to watch and could contain disturbing footage that will need to be stated in your advertisement.  The last point that I would like to make is the Intellectual Property(IP) and copyright, Intellectual Property, could be a brand, invention, a song, or even a design. This fits in with copyright and the use of YouTube and illegal video downloads. Copyright is against law if you do not have the rights to use something that is not yours, this could be written, theatrical, musical, films, book layouts, sound recordings and finally broadcasting, you can buy the rights for certain products if you wish but without the rights you are committing a crime. In the very last section of your advert you ask the applicant to make a short documentary on the topic of no date rape campaign where they have been asked interview young female victims and male offenses, after that you want the track to have a popular sound track, although you have not stated what sound track nor have you stated that you have the rights but you have mentioned that you will be giving a budget of £20 this will not cover the copyright fee to purchase the rights to a song so you will be breaking the law as you will not be able to get a songwriters permission.
Yours sincerely,

pros and cons for technologies

Consumer products:
pros: Most items are quiet cheap this meaning that young independent filmmakers can afford the software and equipment this allows more young filmmakers to gain experience with making films.
Cons: due to the items being so cheap many people will go for this rather than high quality gear, although cheapness is a pro, it could also be a con, the cheaper they are the cheaper the product is to make therefore it could be break easily.

Satellite and cable:

Pros for satellite: It can offer hundreds of channels on one box, this giving the audience a wider viewing choice, to suit different target audiences.
Cons for satellite: The satellite dish has to be in clear view, if hidden by trees it could possibly disrupt this signal, this will not allow channels to be viewed.
Pros for cable: With Cable TV you can buy packages rather than just the cable box, for example you could get discount on internet and phone if you buy a package rather than buying them separately.
Cons for cable: The providers for cable will confuse you of the prices for packages in the long run and will try and charge more if they see an area that they can do so, its always wise to make sure you fully understand what you are buying if its in a package deal.

Analogue and Digital:

Pros for Analogue: once analogue is recorded to tape the audio will be stored.
Cons for Analogue: Analogue adds extra noise, this noise makes the analogue become less and less to what the original signal is.

Pros for Digital: Digital signal carries out more signals per second than analogue, they also maintain more quality for longer periods of time.
Cons for Digital: digital communications need a bigger bandwidth than analogue to transmit the same information.

Internet:
Pros: Internet is a great way of communication, to talk to somebody from different parts of the country to share business proposals, also to stream movies and TV programmes from your own home.
Cons: file sharing and piracy is a major con, this will break a lot of copyright rules.

Interactive:
Pros: Using social media platforms to create sites for job opportunities and to spread the word about a film you may have recently made.
Cons: Only certain types of media can be interactive.

High definition and 3D

Pros for high definition: Better quality to enjoy high resolution films.
Cons for high definition: Not all software supports high definition, for example the Iphone 6 does not support 4K viewing.
Pros for 3D: More realistic viewing style, allowing you to feel like you are apart of the movie (2nd person narration).
Cons for 3D Only certain TV's support 3D so if you do not have a 3D TV it will not be possible to view.

Pay per view:

Pros: A pro for pay per view would be buying the item once, rather than paying monthly for something.
Cons: You will have to pay for the viewing which could be costly.

On demand viewing:

Pros: It has interactive features, allowing viewers to watch real time TV at a later date.
Cons: It will only work if Wi-fi so if you are not in reach of wi-fi on demand viewing will not work.

Streaming content:

Pros: It is an easy way to watch films at home.
Cons: It can be illegal if done incorrectly.

Digital recorders

Pros: It will allow you to record films and TV shows to a usb or a hard drive, this will allow you to save film programmes to re watch them.
Cons: They have a little interior space.

Public Service Broadcasting is intended for public purposes rather than for commercial interests, Ofcom are one of the main regulators and have stated that certain television and radio stations have requirements as part of their license to broadcast. A very good example of Public Service Broadcasting is the BBC the audience pay a licence fee of £131.50 a year with different rates for the elderly and the blind. This means that the BBC are just for the public's interest, no adverts and no product placement. They focus on the viewing pleasure for the audience such as realising new content, updating their online websites, the annual free that the public have to pay goes to different sectors of the BBC, as I mention above, some percentage will go to making new content, updating their online websites, making new scripts and so on.

Commercial Broadcasting is also known as private broadcasting, were privately owned corporate media broadcast television and radio shows. For example ITV are one of the largest commercial company of channels in the UK. ITV delivers their content on more than one platform including online websites. Out of the small family of channels including ITV, ITV2, ITV3, Encore and CITV, ITV made their largest share in 2015 with advertising market with 46.1%.

Corporate and private ownership is where the television channel or programme is funded by advertising, where they are more interested in satisfying the shareholder than the viewers. Not all corporate broadcasting have private broadcasting, they will use advertising instead. Private ownership's have more channels to vary from, But will have certain channels that fit a certain target audience for example MTV are owned by a private ownership called Viacom Media Networks. MTV have a target audience between 16 and 24. This means that the adverts shown on MTV will be fit to that target audience. Rather than Discovery channel were the target audience is ranged between 24 and 54.

Global companies are based in one country, and trades all around the world. For example The Walt Disney Company is based in Burbank California, but trades with other countries such as Paris, Japan, Hong Kong, Florida, China and Hawaii. Global companies will slightly adapt to the country they are trading in, for instance Walt Disney in Florida will adapt to the weather and the food that they eat, and it will then adapt in China with changing the language and different online websites to suit the country.

Vertical Integration is when one company has ownership of production, distribution and exhibition by the same studio. A very good example of vertical integration is Warner brothers company. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, was produced mainly by Warner brothers with help from Heyday Films. the film was then distrusted by Warner brothers Picture studio, and then exhibited by Warner Brothers where they used their international chain to help promote the film.

Horizontal integration is the complete opposite to vertical integration, Horizontal integration is where the production company has ownership of a particular area and can expand and buy out other companies that specialise in their sector. For example Casino Royale (2006) directed by Martin Campbell. Uses Horizontal Integration, Sony is the main company that produced the film and other Sony owned companies for example Columbia Pictures. But during the production process other companies helped make the film, for instance Eon productions which is an american owned British film company that are well known for making James Bond films. A disadvantage of horizontal integration is creating monopolies, once they own most parts of the industry they can no longer go any higher.

The Licence fee is an annual fee of £131.50, as stated above the licence fee is slightly different for elderly and the blind. This means that they cannot have product placement or advertisements during or in there television programmes due to company being for the public's interest. BBC is a very good example of using the licence fee.

Subscription is signing up for a certain product in advance, for the media industry subscriptions are used for sites like Netflix, Love film and Amazon prime. Netflix is a perfect example of a subscription fee. Each month you pay a fee, that will offer you different plans to suit your need, Netflix have three plans to choose from (basic, standard and premium) each changing in price. Once payed for the month you receive netflix on how ever many screens you have paid for plus a long list of different films and TV programmes and different genres of each.

One-off payment to own a product is paying for something upfront with no extra costs and receiving the product there and then. For example purchasing a DVD in a video shop, after the purchase the product is yours. You do not need to return it or pay monthly subscriptions for it.

Pay per view is paying through a company like sky for something once, and after that viewing is complete there are no more payments. A very good example of pay per view is Sky, If you have a standard sky box with no upgrades but wish to watch a major boxing game that's airing later that evening, then sky box office allows to purchase the game to view once. A good example of Pay per view is Sky Box office, boxing.

sponsorship is a form of advertising where the company pays to be apart of an event. A very good example of sponsorship is Audible.com, This company is one of the many audiobook down loaders. Audible pay's youtubers to promote their products in their videos. Here is a youtuber that has been sponsored by Audible.com

Advertising is used to promote different products or services, in the media industry advertisements can be displayed on billboards, magazines, television radio and so much more. A very good example of advertising and how much it costs depending on the show, is ITV's coronation street, one of coronation streets sponsorship's are compare the market where they signed a 30 million deal for three years. During the super bowl in 2015, over 111 Million people this means that if a company wanted a 30 second advert commercial they would be paying roughly $3.5 million.

Product placement is when manufacturing good pay companies such as film production companies money to display their product in film or television programme to gain exposure. A very comical example of this is a clip from Wayne's World (1992) where he states he doesn't bow down to any sponsor.

Private Capital is where private investigators put their own money into private companies. For example private investors such as Megan Ellison, who had received a lump sum of money from her parents and didn't exactly know what to do with the money, During Megan Ellison's starting career in the film business she contacted Katherine Brooks who is the writer and director of
Loving Annabelle (2006) and suggested in investing in the film makers next movie. From there on Megan Ellison has been a private Investor for films such as Main Street (2010) starring Colin Firth it was given a little attention at film festivals but never gained general release.

Crowd-funding is a way of raising money for a production, you can raise a small amount of money from lots of different people. For example Kick starter is an online website that helps films get the budget they need to peruse the making. Other ways of funding is self funding for example Kevin Smith the maker of Clerks (1994) To finance the movie Kevin Smith maxed out dozens of credit cards and sold his prize possession of comic books making $27,575.  He then casted friends for the main roles, this saved him a lot of money and a lot of time when pre producing.
The film was a critical financial success making $3.1 million.

Development funds provide appropriate funds and technical help that a company needs. An example for that is MDIF (media development investment fund) helping media companies to become financially stable. Since 1996 MDIF have invested 133 million dollars into 108 independent businesses. The BFI  and National Lotto are a development funder, they help fund films for example London Road a film made in 2015 directed by Rufus Norris, the film documents the events of 2006, when they found the bodies of five women. Another film funded by the BFI is Iona made in 2015 directed by Scott Graham, the film is based on Iona's teenage son and to take him to a holy island to escape from violent crime. The BFI uses fund from the lottery to help fund the films. Iona had a budget of one million pounds.
