Technologies in the film industry
pros and cons for technologies
Consumer products:
pros: Most items are quiet cheap this meaning that young independent filmmakers can afford the software and equipment this allows more young filmmakers to gain experience with making films.
Cons: due to the items being so cheap many people will go for this rather than high quality gear, although cheapness is a pro, it could also be a con, the cheaper they are the cheaper the product is to make therefore it could be break easily.
Satellite and cable:
Pros for satellite: It can offer hundreds of channels on one box, this giving the audience a wider viewing choice, to suit different target audiences.
Cons for satellite: The satellite dish has to be in clear view, if hidden by trees it could possibly disrupt this signal, this will not allow channels to be viewed.
Pros for cable: With Cable TV you can buy packages rather than just the cable box, for example you could get discount on internet and phone if you buy a package rather than buying them separately.
Cons for cable: The providers for cable will confuse you of the prices for packages in the long run and will try and charge more if they see an area that they can do so, its always wise to make sure you fully understand what you are buying if its in a package deal.
Analogue and Digital:
Pros for Analogue: once analogue is recorded to tape the audio will be stored.
Cons for Analogue: Analogue adds extra noise, this noise makes the analogue become less and less to what the original signal is.
Pros for Digital: Digital signal carries out more signals per second than analogue, they also maintain more quality for longer periods of time.
Cons for Digital: digital communications need a bigger bandwidth than analogue to transmit the same information.
Internet:
Pros: Internet is a great way of communication, to talk to somebody from different parts of the country to share business proposals, also to stream movies and TV programmes from your own home.
Cons: file sharing and piracy is a major con, this will break a lot of copyright rules.
Interactive:
Pros: Using social media platforms to create sites for job opportunities and to spread the word about a film you may have recently made.
Cons: Only certain types of media can be interactive.
High definition and 3D
Pros for high definition: Better quality to enjoy high resolution films.
Cons for high definition: Not all software supports high definition, for example the Iphone 6 does not support 4K viewing.
Pros for 3D: More realistic viewing style, allowing you to feel like you are apart of the movie (2nd person narration).
Cons for 3D Only certain TV's support 3D so if you do not have a 3D TV it will not be possible to view.
Pay per view:
Pros: A pro for pay per view would be buying the item once, rather than paying monthly for something.
Cons: You will have to pay for the viewing which could be costly.
On demand viewing:
Pros: It has interactive features, allowing viewers to watch real time TV at a later date.
Cons: It will only work if Wi-fi so if you are not in reach of wi-fi on demand viewing will not work.
Streaming content:
Pros: It is an easy way to watch films at home.
Cons: It can be illegal if done incorrectly.
Digital recorders
Pros: It will allow you to record films and TV shows to a usb or a hard drive, this will allow you to save film programmes to re watch them.
Cons: They have a little interior space.
